Sustaining Growth & Innovation in Fintech

Infographic showing results of a fintech leadership transformation initiative, including 16% EBITDA growth, NPS improvement from 4 to 8, two new products launched, faster decision-making, and stronger leadership alignment.

Background & Challenge:

Fintech Firm is a fast-growing fintech/telecom company providing prepaid wireless and payment solutions. By 2020, Fintech Firm was experiencing rapid revenue growth. However, its leadership team operated in silos, which began to hinder decision-making and scalability. The CEO engaged the Innovative Leadership Institute® to help unify the 16-person senior leadership team and maintain the company’s growth momentum. The aim was to break down departmental barriers and improve strategic execution. As a result, Fintech Firm could continue innovating at high speed without growing pains.

ILI Solution:

ILI implemented a customized leadership program that focused on cross-functional collaboration and strategic alignment. This included executive coaching for each senior leader and a series of facilitated team workshops. In these sessions, Fintech Firm’s executives practiced open communication and joint problem-solving on real issues.

For example, they coordinated a significant product launch across the technology, marketing, and customer service units. ILI coaches introduced tools for effective meeting management and decision-making, which the team adopted. A key outcome was the establishment of a weekly senior leadership huddle. This replaced infrequent, siloed meetings, so the team could discuss priorities and address emerging issues.

Over several months, Fintech Firm’s leaders developed a shared vision and operating rhythm. ILI’s continuous feedback and guidance supported this process.

Results & Impact:

The impact on Fintech Firm’s business was quickly evident in its innovation output and organizational efficiency:

  • Continued Strong Growth: Fintech Firm sustained a 16% YoY overall increase in EBITDA and an NPS score increase from 4 to 8 after the ILI engagement. Improved leadership cohesion helped ensure that the company’s expansion initiatives (entering new markets and onboarding new partners) proceeded smoothly. Fintech Firm’s growth did not stall as it scaled—a testament to the leaders’ ability to manage complexity better than before. The CFO noted that after the program, the leadership team was “much more as one unified team,” eliminating previous internal disconnects that could have impeded growth.
  • Accelerated Product Innovation: With silo walls removed, Fintech Firm sped up its innovation cycle. In the year following the program, the company launched two major new products, marking a notable increase in its development pace. Previously, it typically launched one product per year. One product was a new mobile app for underbanked consumers, and another was an analytics platform for retailers. These launches were successful and expanded Fintech Firm’s revenue streams. Internally, leadership attributed this acceleration to improved teamwork. Product development, IT, and marketing leaders collaborated from day one (a change fostered by ILI’s training) instead of working sequentially or at cross-purposes. The CTO remarked that product decisions that used to be revisited multiple times (wasting months) were now resolved much faster. This was because all stakeholders were aligned early.
  • Quicker Strategic Decisions: Fintech Firm’s executive decision-making became significantly more agile. Before, lengthy debates between departments often delayed key decisions. For example, setting pricing for new services might involve drawn-out back-and-forth between sales and finance. After ILI’s program, such decisions were made in a fraction of the time it took before. The CFO observed that meetings that had previously lasted hours were shortened to 30-minute, focused discussions. This was possible because leaders agreed on goals and trusted each other’s perspectives. One concrete example was a partnership opportunity in late 2021. The leadership team evaluated and approved a strategic partnership within days. Previously, similar opportunities had taken weeks to resolve. Consequently, this agility enabled Fintech Firm to outpace competitors in forming key alliances.
  • Cultural Transformation: Intangibly, Fintech Firm’s culture shifted to one of accountability and open communication. Leaders began openly sharing challenges and seeking input, a shift from the earlier, defensive, siloed mindset. This cultural change trickled down—employees noticed clearer direction and unity from the top. Following the engagement, internal surveys revealed that staff reported higher confidence in leadership and improved interdepartmental cooperation. While hard to quantify, this cultural cohesion reinforced the tangible business outcomes (faster innovation and sustained growth).

Client Perspective:

Fintech Firm’s management was delighted with the results. The CEO noted that the ILI program “refined our focus and eliminated growing pains.” The leadership team can now support the company’s rapid expansion without setbacks. The CFO echoed that sentiment, especially appreciating that the team can act as one: “We operate much more as one unified team now, which enables us to execute our strategy faster and smarter,” he said. By helping Fintech Firm’s leaders get on the same page, ILI ensured the company’s impressive growth did not falter. In summary, ILI’s leadership development intervention directly contributed to Fintech Firm’s ongoing success: The company maintained strong financial growth, brought innovations to market swiftly, and cultivated a leadership culture ready to guide the business through its subsequent phases of expansion.
